Cabin Counselor (Age: 19+)

The Cabin Counselor/Instructor is responsible for guiding, supervising, instructing, coaching, organizing, caring for campers in the cabin, in activities, on trips, and throughout camp.

Position Purpose: The Cabin Counselor/Instructor is responsible for guiding, supervising, instructing, coaching, organizing, caring for campers in the cabin, in activities, on trips, and throughout camp.

NOTE: Anticipated instructional needs for the summer (but not limited to) are: Tennis, La Crosse, Riflery, Tennis, Mtn. Biking, Fishing, Water Skiing, Soccer, Sailing, Woodworking, Nature, Track, Basketball, and Swimming.

Minimum Age Required: Age 19 by the time Summer begins

Employment Dates are: June 11th- August 8th (some staff may be required to come two days prior for specific training needs in certain areas)

Starting Salary: $3,400-$3,600 (depending on age/year in school)

  1. Primary Responsibilities are:
    • Live in a cabin with campers and a co-counselor, sharing time with and creating a positive camper group.
    • Ensure that campers are properly supervised at all times and that all established camp policies are observed.
    • Supervise daily living, including waking boys up and putting them to bed at night, overseeing campers’ personal hygiene, counseling homesick campers, and leading off site overnight backpacking and canoeing camping trips.
    • Communicate effectively with co-counselors, heads of programs, and Directors including working together to provide consistent, positive discipline.
    • Actively work to help campers develop friendships, demonstrate respect for others, and grow in leadership and responsibility.
    • Complete all assigned reports, record keeping, and parent communications as assigned.
    • Participate in physical preparations of pre and post camp.
  2. Maintain high standards of health and safety throughout camp for campers and staff. You will:
    • Provide for the physical, psychological, and emotional care of each camper within your supervision, including recognition of personal health needs.
    • Assist campers with personal, interpersonal, and health issues, and discuss with Camp Nurse or Director when appropriate.
    • Ensure that campers follow all established safety procedures for activities throughout camp, including providing a safety orientation, safety checking equipment, and ensuring the proper use of equipment.
  3. Develop and deliver instruction and programming that is fun, engaging, developmental, and appropriate for the age and ability of campers. You will:
    • Plan and teach progressive activities/classes designed to accommodate different ages, abilities, and interests, including rainy day activities.
    • Follow all established objectives, progressions, procedures and safety regulations.
    • Continuously evaluate the success of the program and adjust activities accordingly.
    • Model good sportsmanship, cooperation, spirit, and effort.
    • Participate in the maintenance, inventory, and care of equipment and supplies used in camp activities.
    • Plan, organize and/or supervise special cabin, unit or camp activities and trips as delegated by the Director/Program Head.

Kitchen Assistant (Age: 16-17)

The main role for the cookie is to prep, serve and clean up after meals. Each cookie will also be assigned to assist in instruction for 1 class based on skill and interest. The cookie will also be given the opportunity to be assigned to a younger cabin to learn from, and support cabin counselors while also participating in one trip with that assigned cabin in the summer.

(must be former Red Arrow Camper)

COMPENSATION: $2100

DUTIES: The main role for the cookie is to prep, serve and clean up after meals. Each cookie will also be assigned to assist in instruction for 1 class based on skill and interest. The cookie will also be given the opportunity to be assigned to a younger cabin to learn from, and support cabin counselors while also participating in one trip with that assigned cabin in the summer.

HOURS: are 7am to mid-morning … 11:45 to early afternoon … and 2:45 until clean-up is done. Evenings are duty free. Cookies receive two half-days off each week on Wednesday and Sunday following noon meal clean-up. Transportation to town and back is provided by the camp for time off on Sundays as long as rules and restrictions that go with this are followed. Vehicle availability and work performance determine transportation options on Wednesdays.

QUALIFICATIONS: commitment to maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment and the ability to take direction and work as a team. Your performance in this role is a stepping stone if considering a counselor role in the future at Red Arrow Camp.

Stable Assistant (Age: 16-17)

Reporting directly to the Head of the Riding program, stable duties include cleaning stalls and tack, feeding horses as well as prepping them for riding. Stable duties may also include assisting with instruction & helping supervise trail rides.

(must be former Red Arrow Camper)

Compensation: $2100

HOURS: Stable boys start their day at 6:30 and are on duty until 5:00 on average. All meals and housing are provided. Transportation to town and back is provided by the camp for time off on Sundays as long as rules and restrictions that go with this are followed. Vehicle availability and work performance determine transportation options on Wednesdays. Stable boys will be offered the opportunity to participate in camp functions, and social connection with counselors and campers as time allows.

Horseback Riding Director

One of the leading programs at Red Arrow is the equine program which focuses on teaching foundational horsemanship and riding skills to campers as well as aspects of horse care, horse behavior, and stable management. Our beautiful pasture is approximately 25 acres with sound stable, stalls, and tack house.

Job Summary:

The Equine Instructor will oversee all feeding, care, and management of the camp herd of 10-12 horses.  They will be supported by and supervise a Stable Hand(s) who will assist them.  Group lessons of 6-10 kids will run throughout the day, 6 days per week.  Campers who wish to earn a Riding emblem will have opportunities to spend extra time at the stables advancing their horsemanship.  The Equine Instructor will be required to attend all staff events and meetings.  

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Oversee feeding, care, and management of the herd 
  • Developing and adjusting feed programs for individual horses and the herd
  • Working with Director to arrange services from a vet or farrier as needed
  • Managing any behavioral or physical needs a horse might have
  • Stable Management
  • Have an eye for Safety as it pertains to the stable areas and horse spaces
  • Oversee and implement systems around stable upkeep
  • Organizing and caring for Tack 
  • Keeping stables clean and tidy
  • Noticing the need for any repairs in stable or fencing and working with facility manager to have those taken care of promptly
  • Supervise Stable Hand(s)
  • Guide employee in knowing what their duties are each day
  • Support employee in gaining knowledge of stable management and equine care
  • Instruction of campers
  • Emphasis on Safety in all teaching scenarios, i.e. horses that are feeling safe and campers that are feeling safe.  
  • Teach campers in groups of 6-10.
  • Instruct in a variety of areas including general horse behavior, care, and anatomy, grooming, tacking horses up, ground work, arena riding, and trail riding.  
  • Offer time to support individual campers who want to pursue a Riding Emblem with advancing their horsemanship skills and knowledge. 
  • Participate in all staff functions and meetings as necessary
  • Understand camp roles and request support as needed from the proper people.  
  • Contribute to Red Arrow Camp as a whole and support campers and fellow staff in having a safe and fun summer

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience caring for horses and horse spaces
  • Can identify a lame or ill horse, notice signs of colic, administer basic equine first aid.  
  • Competent with English and Western tack, including knowledge about the different bits that may be used in each discipline and the ability to spot any issues with tack that may be a safety or comfort concern for horses or riders.  
  • Competent with teaching a balanced riding position in either English or Western style.  
  • Comfortable with teaching basic foundational riding skills 
  • Mounting and Dismounting safely
  • Emergency or One Rein Stops and Emergency dismounts
  • Proper equitation
  • Balanced seat in walk, trot, and canter
  • Proper rein positions for communicating different maneuvers such as hindquarter yields, forequarter yields, and rein back.  
  • Knowledge of simulations, patterns, and basic teaching exercises that develop riding skills and rider body awareness
  • Knowledge of advanced horsemanship skills including a 2 point jumping seat to support riders over small jumps.
  • Familiar with trail riding etiquette and comfortable leading a group trail ride in safe and structured way
  • Competent to identify a horse that is stressed or not feeling safe and able to take measures to help that horse via groundwork, adjusting the situation that the horse is in, or retreating from the task if appropriate.
  • Competent to identify a camper that’s not feeling safe and able to take measures to help that camper via offering support, adjusting the situation the camper is in, or retreating from the task if appropriate.  
  • Able to problem solve with horses and campers around behavioral issues, and know when to pull a horse or camper out of an activity in which it cannot stay safe.  
  • Able to demonstrate leadership skills, effective communication, and maintain situational awareness so as to support and fun and safe learning space for Equine activities.  

Job Type:  

Summer season.  June 9th-August 5th

Beginning of salary range being $7,000 or higher (dependent on experience)

Office Manager

The Office Manager and Camp Programs Assistant will work closely with the Director and other key Senior/No-Cabin staff.

Job Overview: 
The Senior Staff position of Office Manager and Camp Programs Assistant manages the overall operation of the camp office and camp store during the summer camp season (June 9th- approx.-. August 8th) Customer service, guest and parent daily communications, mail system organization, staff administrative support, proven ability to multi-task, and ability to be a positive influence to boys and staff a must. This position involves considerable independent work as well as being an effective member of a team! 


Secondarily, the Office Manager and Camp Programs Assistant also will serve as a vital support to our Programs and Special events giving assistance to the Head of Programs and Special events as needed when preparing for special events. Class instruction opportunities (such as Scuba, Riflery, and Adventure) available and encouraged based on interest and availability when not in conflict with office duty coverage. 


The Office Manager and Camp Programs Assistant will work closely with the Director and other key Senior/No-Cabin staff. 


Essential Job Functions
With consult with the Executive Director and Head of Programs and Special Events the Office Manager will: 
 
Establish office procedures and manage operation of office systems, and camp store including supply purchasing, store inventory control, and record keeping in CampMinder  
Communicate closely camp Financial Manager and Administrator (Jolene) in facilitating daily administrative/financial procedures related to reimbursements, purchases, store bills, etc. 
Answer phone, email, relay of messages to Director and Staff, etc.
Assist campers as needed in areas of communications, messages, store purchases, mail, etc. 
Often be the first point of contact for parents and guests of camp.  Must be customer service oriented and friendly. Must maintain high level of professionalism with all parents, guests, and staff. 
Assist with preparing for special events 
Manage overall finances of the camp store and inform Camp Director of income and expense status.
Manage incoming and outgoing mail
Maintain inventory of office supplies and place appropriate orders.
Ensure office equipment is in good operating condition.
Responsible for carrying out process for shipping trunks home post camp
Responsible for management of camper day off schedule and pre-arranged parent phone/Zoom calls
Drive to town for occasional supplies (gas reimbursement)  
Manage petty cash, recommend purchases, and perform shopping function as needed for all camp supplies.
Refer concerns to Camp Director.
Prepare completed Health and Inspection binder in compliance with Vilas County Health code 
Record, file, prepare evaluations, and documents for specific functions and programs.
Support Head of Programs and Special events as needed when time allows
Instruct classes based on interest and availability 
And other duties as assigned by Director


Hours: 
This position is a seasonal paid position running from June 9th to August 8th. Approximately 40 hours per week with one full day off per week, and evenings off after dinner. Additional day off requests on a case-by-case basis with Director. Flexibility is possible. Downtimes present opportunity for this role to give attention to personal matters (online work, etc.)
