  • Show proper tacking and jibing.
  • As helmsman, sail all “points of sail”
  • Demonstrate capsize and righting.
  • Demonstrate “man overboard rescue”
  • Show leadership and respect for equipment and other, positive attitude, practice safety rules and assist in setting up and putting away sailing equipment.

Intermediate

  • Complete the above.
  • Describe why a sailboat sails including shape of boat, sail w/airflow, dagger/center board.
  • Sail a 3 point course -and- windward/leeward course in medium winds on a laser alone.
  • Show docking techniques on boat, buoy, pier with an instructor.
  • Demonstrate stopping a boat, backing out of irons.
  • Tie the following: bowline, figure 8, round turn and 2 half hitches and square knot.
  • Do 3 jibs in a 5-minute period without assistance w/a laser.
  • Sail a laser single handed in medium wind.
  • Rig and sail a laser ii with an assistant.
  • Sail a 3 pt course with instructor with the laser ii.
  • Assist waterfront counselor for at least one full optional.

Advanced

  • Complete beginner and intermediate requirements.
  • Sail a laser ii without assistance in light to medium wind w/o capsizing.
  • Know the rules of the road (starboard, port, windward, leeward)
  • Show proper trapeze form on a laser ii.
  • Explain use of tell tales.
  • Be able to roll tack/roll jibe.
  • Know racing rules
  • Know starting procedures

Expert Designation (not chateau)

Tell sailing staff you wish to work on the designation before the end of the first sign-up period.

  • Complete all above before the end of the second sign-up period.
  • Be assured at least one camper at the beginning level to work with and bring them through beginning and intermediate.
  • Be a team captain with crew and efficiently sail the “Laser”.
  • Assist in at least 2 full optionals or 1 pre-class/class. Including rigging boats & setting assignments.

Instructor Designation (chateau)

Tell sailing staff you wish to work on the designation before the end of the first sign-up period. Three (3) sign-ups. No exceptions.

  • Complete all above (not expert) before the end of the 2nd. Signup.
  • Be a team captain with crew and efficiently sail the “Laser”!
  • Be a helping hand, instructor from the get go!
  • Help with setup of boats for at least two morning classes.
  • Help with at least 2 water-front optionals or 1 pre-class/class. Including rigging boats and setting assignments.
