General Packing Tips for Summer Camp

Label Everything

Every piece of clothing, equipment, and accessory should have your child’s name on it. This not only minimizes loss but also eases cabin life when shared spaces become cluttered.

Involve Your Camper

Let your child participate in packing. This familiarizes them with their belongings and reduces anxiety when unpacking at camp.

Pack Practical Items

Focus on durable and versatile clothing that can withstand outdoor activities and multiple washes. Old, comfortable clothes work best.

Clothing Essentials for Summer Camp

Daily Wear

  • 8-10 T-shirts
  • 8-10 pairs of shorts
  • 2-3 pairs of long pants (lightweight and quick-drying materials preferred)
  • 2-3 sweaters or sweatshirts
  • 1 hoodie

Footwear

  • Running shoes for sports and daily activities
  • Sturdy hiking boots (optional)
  • Water shoes with closed toes for canoeing and lake activities
  • Sandals for waterfront use only

Sleepwear

  • 2-3 sets of pajamas

Outerwear

  • Waterproof rain jacket (essential for wilderness trips)
  • Rain pants for added protection

Swimwear

  • 2-3 swimsuits

Accessories

  • Broad-brimmed hat for sun protection
  • Knit hat for cooler evenings
  • Lightweight gloves

Camp Bedding and Linens

Essential Bedding

  • 2 sets of twin-size sheets
  • 2-3 pillowcases
  • Pillow (optional, as camps often provide one)
  • 2-3 lightweight towels with distinctive designs

Sleeping Bag (What to look for)

  • Synthetic insulation for faster drying
  • Compact size for easy packing
  • Temperature rating of 40°F

Optional

  • Sleeping mat for added comfort
  • Compact camping pillow

Personal Hygiene and Toiletries

Must-Have Toiletries

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

Pack For Camp Like A Pro

Recommended Shipping / Storage Solutions

Tip: It’s important to not overpack. Work to fit everything you’d like your camper to have in the duffel bag and trunk. Our recommendation is to place all bedding and toiletry materials in the duffel bag and all other clothing items in the trunk. You can buy nice durable trunks and duffels by clicking here.

  • 32” x 18” x 16.5” footlocker or trunk. Make sure it's durable. Plastic tends to fall apart quickly.
  • Laundry bag for weekly washing (30”x40” nylon recommended)
  • A large duffel bag.

Communication (Letter Writing)

  • Pre-addressed, stamped envelopes for letters home or relatives
  • An empty cigar box is a great solution for storing letter writing material

Packing Tip for Parents of Younger Campers

To ease homesickness and encourage communication, include pre-addressed and stamped envelopes for letters to family and friends when deciding what to pack for summer camp. These small items not only help your child stay connected with loved ones but also promote valuable writing skills. Many campers find joy in sharing their adventures and daily experiences, and having envelopes ready to go makes the process effortless. Additionally, packing a small comfort item, such as a favorite stuffed animal, a cozy blanket, or even a cherished photo, can make a big difference in your child’s emotional comfort during their time away. These personal touches provide a sense of familiarity and security, which is especially important for first-time campers.

Beyond these essentials, you might also consider items like a journal for jotting down memories or a few favorite bedtime books to create a relaxing nighttime routine. By thoughtfully including these items, you ensure that your child feels both prepared and comforted, making their summer camp experience more enjoyable and less intimidating.
