Letter From Ryan

OFFICE MANAGER

The slide is in the lake, the pinecones are picked up, the name tags are on our bunks already- we’re back! This is a message to both introduce myself, as well as update you on some communication policies. My name is Ryan Princer and I’ll be in the role of Office Manager at Red Arrow this summer. I was a camper from 2006-2008 and I’ve been lucky to be a counselor for the last three summers. I’m so excited to be in this role this year as it allows me to be a part of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps camp moving forward.

As far as communication goes, we’re requesting that emails be sent to the following address as much as possible: summeroffice@redarrowcamp.com. This will allow us to best manage our time, and I’ll be passing things to Eric and Jolene whenever it’s most appropriate. I’ll be in the office during the day between breakfast and dinner. The office phone number is 715-385-2769, please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have! I’ll get back to you within 24 hours if contacted outside of normal business hours.

A couple more notes- unfortunately, camp has to be closed this summer for the safety of our campers. We ask that you respect this policy and encourage you to come and visit us at the end of the summer, beginning on August 6th with the first showing of our camp play. As always, we encourage you to write letters to our campers! They love hearing from you, all we ask is that you keep the maximum number of letters per week to 3 in order for them to get the most out of their time away.

If your camper has a birthday over the summer, send me an email a couple of days in advance and we’ll be happy to schedule a phone call with them! Finally, in lieu of camper days off, we’re planning on an optional FaceTime/Zoom call with your camper twice over the course of the summer. These will occur during week 3 and week 5 of the summer. I’ll be sending out more information in the next few weeks as we get closer. We’re looking forward to getting all of the boys here in a few days! Please reach out with any questions, big or small. Have a great summer!

Learn About Pre-Camp

OUR TRAINING FOR CAMP

IMG_9966

Pre-camp requires a lot of man-hours spent on hard labor. Mowing, weed whacking, sweeping, and setup. The other part of pre-camp is spent learning about the standards and expectations we require for our counselors. There are several different ‘hats’ the staff has to wear in order to be impactful and successful for the boys. We have several meetings covering a wide range of topics.

In our ‘Counseling the Cabin’ meeting, we start out by discussing ways to foster cabin harmony, establishing expectations, the importance of inspection, and cabin hygiene. We then move on to the different developing stages of our boys by age. Each boy is unique, but we look at the developmental stages of children and apply it to our campers in a way that makes the staff better equipped to lead them. This is our attempt to maximize the impact we have on the boys and make it the best summer possible for them. We expand more on this in a previous article we wrote about “The Red Arrow Way”.

A slide from one of Eric's powerpoint presentations on "The Red Arrow Way"

In some meetings, we address how to recognize and spot bullying. Bullying is something we don’t tolerate here at Red Arrow. We spend a lot of time learning strategies and best practices to identify and address bullying in camp. Alongside bullying, we discussed our standard for camper discipline and behavioral challenges.

One crucial topic we discuss is effective leadership practices as a counselor, and how to identify leadership in our campers. We believe that leadership is not about personality- it’s about behavior. Leadership behavior can be distinguished in five different ways -

  1. Modeling the way

  2. Inspiring a shared vision

  3. Challenging the process

  4. Enabling others to act

  5. Encouraging the heart.

We expect to see these traits in our counselors and attempt to guide our campers towards them as well. From our sessions on leadership, we transition right into discussions on our award system.

One of the pages from our Red Arrow handbook on effective leadership

Red Arrow has a robust emblem system filled with activity-based emblems like Biking, Swim, Riding, Rifle, and Ski as well as our character-based emblems. The staff reviews, in detail, the criteria and process for the boys to earn these character-based emblems (Best Tripper, Sunshine, Inspection, & Honor Camper).

Once our staff is brought up to speed with our award system we go into how to be a coach and instructor at Camp. Butch - our Director of Programming - walks through the expectations and standards of our unique way of instructing their campers in their activities. The staff runs clinics for many of our more popular activities in camp and learns how to run effective drills, exercises, methods. Our activities in camp offer the boys a chance to further develop the sports and skills they may already know or discover new hobbies and activities they have never tried before and we take enormous pride in the way we coach and instruct our campers here at Red Arrow.

IMG_0065

Finally, our staff takes a deep dive into the health and safety procedures we have here at camp. Our nursing staff, Linda Coleman & Kara Greve ran through all the wilderness first aid and CPR training for our staff. We spare no expense to ensure that we can send our campers out with confident counselors who can properly navigate any situation.

Red Arrow is unique in so many ways and the amount of time we take to focus on the development and improvement of each boy is one of them. Every boy here at camp will have to opportunity to grow in ways they never thought possible. We cannot wait for this summer to begin and look forward in having all of our cabins filled with campers once again.
